"SAE CARES"

This year's Florida Beta Alumni Weekend will have a new twist.   While catching up with old friends we are going to make a difference in the Tallahassee community...We are going to make a difference by giving something back and fulfilling the ideals of The True Gentleman.

This year, a local charity has been selected to be the beneficiary of our SAE weekend and the initiative is SAE CARES. The goal of this initiative is to raise $15, 000 for Capital Area Healthy Start.

Healthy Start is a local organization that provides support and services for pregnant women and infants who are at risk.   Infant mortality is much higher in Tallahassee area than it should be and Healthy Start works to provide the services needed immediately by pregnant women, while also identifying improvements needed for healthier babies in the future.  Healthy Start is about making a difference everyday. Their website is capitalareahealthystart.org.

The price for the happy hour on Friday Nov 4 and the tailgate barbeque on Saturday will $85 for alumni, $35 for their date and $5 for any children. When registering, everyone will have the opportunity to go above and beyond the minimum in the spirit of giving. Our tax-deductible gifts will provide much needed help to those who desperately need it.

The core group who are going to make “SAE Cares” happen are:

Tom Harrison – fall 1991 – head of the initiative
Elton Woodward – Fall 1960
Lee Huszagh – Fall 1962
Chris Holley – spring 1976
John Rivers – fall 1984 (GA Sigma)
Tom Jackson – fall 1986

Please make "SAE Cares" an incredible success.

AND FOR A RECAP...

During the weekend of November 4-6, more than 350 SAE alumni and their dates invaded their former stomping grounds for the first ever “SAE all-year reunion”. Even though the word of the reunion did not reach every brother possible, it did a great many of them resulting in the greatest single showing of Florida Beta brothers in chapter history.

The weekend was an unequivocal success. On the morning of November 4 th, 4 teams of 4 brothers paired up for a few rounds of golf. Team 1960s composed of Les Abstein, Johnny Roberts, Tom Proctor nearly pulled off an upset but were bested by the team representing the 1990s of Dave Sikes, Frank Diplacido, Ron Draa and Lee Chavez. Team 70s (Tony Diez, Tom Wilson, Ed Davis and Charlie Atwood) also had a strong showing, something that could not be said for Team 80s as Alex Grohmann, John Greene, Ken Nathan and Dave Ross appeared to be playing some other sport than golf. Everyone was wondering where Robert Frappier was hiding, only to later find out he had already played golf the day before with a bunch of Lambda Chi students. At least everyone at the tournament knew beforehand that Bill Rafferty backed out because he was scared of the competition.

As the afternoon progressed and brothers who had not seen each other in many years started to bump into each others at the hotels, the excitement began to build. Around 6pm, the doors of the University Club opened up as the alumni and their dates started to filter in for the dinner and reunion ceremony. After dinner, 5 speakers, each representing a different decade from 1950 to 2000, spoke to the crowd with stories of memory past. Frank Shaw, Bradley Munroe, Charlie Atwood, Michael Fredericks and Pat Morris all gave the crowd something specific to them.

The next morning, brother John Rivers successfully planned to feed the 120 people who registered for his bbq pork, chicken and rib as well as a share of 3 kegs. Six hours later, the planning proved sufficient enough to feed the over 200 brothers and dates who actually showed up, even though the kegs had to be replaced at least twice each. At that time, everyone strolled into the stadium and no one even seemed to mind that tiny little NC State upset our beloved Seminoles that night. Even though there was a little sadness in the 150 brother strong seating block inside of Doak Campbell Stadium, there was still a good time to be had among the crowd.

Upon returning and finishing off every bit of food and drink, the men of Florida Beta wondering into the local establishments of Tallahassee with their close friends from years past. For one nice long weekend, old friends remembered the true meaning of “brotherhood”.
